Foothills Lutheran Church, a congregation of Lutheran Church – Canada, has been sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in the Calgary area for over 40 years. Foothills is a family-oriented congregation with people of all ages not only worshiping but also involved in the ministry of the church. The congregation is also multi-cultural - people from many different countries of origin make Foothills their home church.

The ministry of the church is likewise varied. There are on-going programs for children, youth and young adults. Midweek and Sunday adult Bible classes are one of the strengths of the congregation. Foothills has a great choir and other skilled musicians and vocalists who contribute to a dynamic worship service. Women’s groups, seniors’ groups, and other special interest groups make it possible for almost anyone to find a niche at Foothills. Community service and outreach take our congregation members beyond the four walls of the church building.

The Word of God and the message of forgiveness in Christ is central in all that the congregation teaches and does.

Meet our Pastors!

Pastor Laverne Hautz

I have been the pastor here at Foothills since 1997, after spending more than eight years at a church in Winnigeg.  My former career as a math teacher still impacts me.  Sometimes I say, "I'm just teaching a different subject".  Of course, the subject is ... God's grace for us in Jesus Christ.  I want to be all  Jesus Christ, and all about connecting people with Jesus Christ in ways that are significant, personal, relevant, and eternal.

I enjoy playing the guitar, puppetry, teaching and as I say, "being a friend to people so that they might become a friend of Jesus".  I am not afraid to try out creative and imaginative ways to communicate the Gospel to people, so don't ever ask "why are you bringing that ____ into the church?"  It's probably for the children's message!

I enjoy playing sports - especially football, curling and softball - and can stomach watching them on TV if there is no one to play with.  My lovely wife, partner and best friend is Deanna and together we have three grown children.

Pastor Mike Kuhn

I am the associate pastor at Foothills and I am mainly responsible for our church planting effort in Tuscany.  I lead and oversee the ministries we run to reach out to people and disciple them.  I also coordinate the team that looks after all aspects our work in Tuscany and the communities that surround it.  The church we are planting will be called Loving Saviour Lutheran Church.

Exciting:  I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of church God raises up through our work - who He will reach through us, what He will do in their lives, and how He will use all of us to impact the community.

Impact: Our ministries to children - like our Bible Camps and Christmas Childcare events - have succeeded beyond our hopes!  God has used them to inspire young hearts to faith in Jesus and to build up our relationship with young families in the Tuscany community.

 Director of Parish Services - Intern

Miriam Winstanley

Miriam became part of the Foothills Staff in July of 2009 as a Parish Services Intern.  Miriam has a Bachelor of Social Work degree, and worked for 20 years in that field before being led to begin coursework toward becoming a Director of Parish Services.  Most recently she has served as secretary and interim organist/choir director at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.  Teaching and sharing the love of Christ in Word and in music is what she loves!  Miriam is wife to Bruce and mother to Kyle, Sarah, and Evan.

Preschool

Betty Ann Chandler

Betty Ann is the preschool teacher/administrator at Foothills. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor degree in Elementary Education with minors in School Libraries and Social Studies. Betty Ann Chandler also has an Child Development Supervisor certificate and was 1st runner up in the 2009 Lutheran Teachers' Association's annual Lutheran Teacher of Excellence award.  An experienced preschool teacher, Betty Ann has taught in Foothills Lutheran Christian Preschool since 2003 and has been a member at Foothills since she was a child herself. Betty Ann has volunteered her time in our Sunday School for 24 years and has taught in our Vacation Bible School for 9 summers.
