October 2, 2022 – In The Midst of Things We Can’t Understand
Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost (Series C, proper 22) – Habakkuk 1:1-3, 2:1-4
We expect life to be smooth sailing, a joyful sea cruise on a wonderful, calm, sunny day. But the reality of life in this world leaves us with all sorts of unanswered questions. Those questions are nothing new; they are as old as sin itself. They are the same questions that Habakkuk had, and which he voices in our text today. Habakkuk was given the answer, although, to be honest, it isn’t necessarily the answer we want. Yet it is the answer that has brought hope and comfort to God’s people throughout the centuries. In the moments when life doesn’t make sense; in the midst of things we cannot understand, we cling to God in faith, and trust in His goodness, His mercy, and His power, for He has–and He will–fulfill His purposes for His beloved children.
